Como Conseguir Los Papeles = How to Obtain Papers

Alfredo Placeres. Seven Stories Press, $5.95 (65pp) ISBN 978-1-58322-277-5

An immigration lawyer in the United States and a Hispanic radio personality, Placeres has compiled a useful introduction to immigration law and procedures for those interested in getting a green card or U.S. citizenship. Although sprinkled here and there with Mexican colloquial terms like hijole (""wow""), the guide is mostly written in an accessible vocabulary that will be easily grasped by most Spanish speakers. Some chapters are divided into handy Q&A blocks that present many possible scenarios and loads of valuable information. For example, Placeres points out that not everyone has to take the citizenship test in English; immigrants over 50 who have lived for more than 20 years in the United States have the option of taking it in their native language. This compact guide is not only informative, but fun to read as well, eliminating much of the complicated jargon and dull language of other immigration manuals. Included are listings of forms and their purposes, agencies that offer free legal services, immigration websites, and Immigration and Naturalization Service offices across the country. Strongly recommended for libraries and bookstores serving the Latino community. Cesar Cazales, ""Criticas""
