Roar: A Big-Mouthed Book of Sounds

Jonathan Litton, illus. by Fhiona Galloway. Tiger Tales, $7.99 (16p) ISBN 978-1-58925-593-7

Round die-cut holes form the wide-open mouths of a progression of startled animals in this board book guessing game. Both Litton’s rhymes and Galloway’s simple digital graphics provide clues about the animals arriving on subsequent pages: “Lion gives a great big roar—/ what could be the matter?/ Who’s he seen that’s frightened him/ with high-pitched chitter-chatter?” A long curly tail grasping a vine hints at Monkey’s appearance on the next page. The animals get smaller and meeker as the book progresses, concluding with a smiling mouse who proves that tiny creatures can be plenty powerful. Simultaneously available: Zoom: A Fast-Paced Book of Colors. Ages 2–5. (Mar.)
