Hook, Line and Sinker

G. A. Guarente. Razorbill, $7.99 (198pp) ISBN 978-1-59514-011-1

During her 15 years, Fiona has had many romantic encounters, all of which have ended badly. Whenever she loses a beau, she buys a pet fish to commemorate her lost love. As this cleverly wrought romance begins, Fiona has just picked up a seventh specimen to add to her TCG (""Tank of Clueless Guys"") when she is reintroduced to Ty, a childhood buddy. Ty, who has developed into a ""tall, good-looking guy,"" rekindles her hope that there may be at least one enticing fish left in the sea. Predictably, infatuated Fiona hits a few obstacles when she casts her line in Ty's direction. One problem is that he already has a girlfriend, named Carla. To make the situation more awkward, Carla (dubbed ""NutraSweet"" by Fiona's best friend) would like nothing more than to be Fiona's pal, even after Ty and Fiona end up playing romantic opposites in a local production of Grease. Interspersed with Fiona's amusing attempts to reel in a new boyfriend are equally funny flashbacks of her former romances turned sour. Although readers may find Fiona frustratingly slow to realize that she's trying to hook the wrong boy (and is more compatible with the teenager who sells her fish), she does emerge as a sympathetic narrator. Her emotions will strike a chord with anyone who has willingly or unwillingly let a good catch slip out of their hands. Ages 12-up.
