The Gobblin’ Society

James P. Blaylock. Subterranean, $40 (176p) ISBN 978-1-59606-948-0
Blaylock’s Victorian adventurer Langdon St. Ives returns (after his last appearance in River’s Edge) in this twisted but delightful fantasy tale. Langdon’s wife, Alice, inherits her uncle’s home in a quiet British seaside town only to discover that the house, which was thought to be empty, is occupied by her eccentric and unscrupulous cousin, Collier, who allows the property to be used by a mysterious “eating club,” the Gobblin’ Society. Langdon and Alice’s adopted son, Finn, investigates Collier’s strange behavior, discovering that Collier and the Gobblin’ Society use the property to access a cave which leads out to the ocean. When Finn finds one of the society’s disturbing shipments in the cave waiting to be smuggled out, he and his parents come to understand the Gobblin’ Society’s gruesome secret and realize that they are in mortal danger. Mystery, mesmerism, murder, and mayhem combine into a jolly good time. Blaylock’s fans will be gratified. Agent: John Berlyne, Zeno Agency. (Apr.)
