My Totally Awkward Supernatural Crush

Laura Toffler-Corrie. Roaring Brook, $17.99 (352p) ISBN 978-1-59643-733-3

In this offbeat fantasy parody from Toffler-Corrie (The Life and Opinions of Amy Finawitz), ordinary 14-year-old Jenna finds out that every 100 years, a door opens “that provides spiritual entities, both pure and impure, a means to travel through our dimension.” When Luke—a beautiful boy with amazing singing, ice-skating, and telepathic abilities—transfers to school, Jenna suspects something is up. But a “sinister” new boy, Adam, quickly reveals his supernatural powers, too. While this book has a fantasy backdrop, readers will most appreciate its humor. Adam and Luke end up starring in the school production of Fiddler on the Roof, for example, which leads to a creative final face-off. Also, characters deliver some hilarious lines (when Luke tries to end a fledging romance with Jenna, she snaps, “So you had a brief life and a tragic death, and then an angelic rebirth and now you’re trying to corral a demon back to wherever he goes back to. Boo hoo! It’s always you, you, you!”). For readers tired of paranormal clichés, this will be a welcome antidote. Ages 12–up. Agent: Elana Roth, Caren Johnson Literary Agency. (Aug.)
