Go Photo! An Activity Book for Kids

Alice Proujansky, illus. by Maggie Prendergast. Aperture, $19.95 (108p) ISBN 978-1-59711-355-7

Proujansky encourages readers to think beyond the selfie in this collection of 23 photography-related activities. The projects range from open-ended ideas, such as creating “Mystery Photos” by seeking out semi-transparent real-life filters “like bubble wrap, pool toys, or a glass of lemonade,” to taking photographs of found faces, creating flip books, and making a “Camera Obscura Robot Head” using a cardboard box. Thoughtful concepts include documenting “a day in the life” of an older individual (images show photographs of a tattooed barber at work) and turning it into a photo story. Proujansky touches on technical aspects of photography, such as composition and lighting (and an opening section offers some loose photography rules including “turn off the flash”), but her emphasis is generally on playful exploration, building readers’ confidence behind the camera through an array of creative projects and ideas.
