Fabric-by-Fabric One-Yard Wonders

Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins. Storey, $29.95 (416p) ISBN 978-1-60342-586-5

Yaker and Hoskins (One-Yard Wonders) return with 101 more projects compiled from various contributors that require only one yard of fabric. This collection is organized by type of fabric, and perhaps its greatest utility is the explanations of how to sew best with each. The projects are heavy on kids clothes, decorative pillows, and handbags, though other decorative home items are also included. Although projects vary from fairly simple to more advanced, the directions assume a more than basic understanding of sewing methods and terms. Illustrations help explain some, but not all, steps. Every project includes a color photo of the finished product and a cutting layout for either the included pattern or with measurements of pieces. With so many projects included, most sewers will find some worth pursuing. At the very least, the book provides a sense of the process and possibilities for using various cotton weights, wovens, corduroy, fleece, wool, knits, and other fabrics. Full color; patterns not seen by PW. (Dec.)
