The Easter Bunny’s Present Hunt

Mieke Goethals. Clavis, $18.95 (32p) ISBN 978-1-60537-620-2

This interactive seek-and-find volume by Goethals invites readers to follow the Easter Bunny, helper mice, and a chicken throughout the book. With “one night to visit all the homes” and only three mice to help him on his “present hunt,” the Easter Bunny visits various locations, hiding sweet treats in various anthropomorphic animals’ residences, including “deep in the jungle” (monkeys) and “in an igloo in the South Pole” (penguins). Throughout, the mice rescue the rabbit from peril, and a mother hen seeks her missing chicks. Goethals’s brightly colored art, done in a 2-D digital style, proves absorbing as questions and keys direct readers toward hidden details. The Dutch-English translation feels clunky in places (“Don’t you forget to look at the paintings?”), and elements of the narration establish an odd note of imminent danger (“They use hairspray in the eyes of the scary snake”), but this activity book will serve as an amusing Easter basket filler.
