Jerry L. Wheeler. Queer Mojo, $16.95 trade paper (268p) ISBN 978-1-60864-178-9

Wheeler’s debut novel (after the collection Strawberries and Other Erotic Fruits) takes readers on an erotic supernatural adventure that puts a fresh spin on the gay vampire genre. Warner is a centuries-old vampire who feeds not on blood but on talent, consuming the essences of humans who have exceptional skills. There are others of his kind, but only one that Warren knows of, Seth, is as strong as he is. Their prey is rare and both are hungry, leading them to fight over a young blues guitarist with more potential than either of them can handle. But they soon realize they’ve been played by a mutual enemy called the Old Man, the greatest of their kind, whose strength and abilities transcend the mortal realm. When Warner’s sentimentality puts him in peril, Seth comes to his rescue and the foes team up to save themselves from the Old Man—but it’s a mysterious third vampire, equally like and unlike Warner, who will save him in the end. Wheeler’s voice for the immortal Warner strikes a great balance between the old-fashioned and the modern, though he occasionally dips into cliché. The fast-paced plot, strong characters, and air of mystery keep the pages flying. Fans of vampire tales will find plenty to enjoy. (Dec.)
