Black’Mor Chronicles: The Cursed; Welcome to the Park of Chimeras

Élian Black’Mor and Carine M. Insight Editions, $34.95 (96p) ISBN 978-1-60887-534-4

Resembling a Victorian-era found document, this book combines a breathless first-person diary narrative and eerie Lovecraftian horror with mysterious, lovingly meticulous art. More of an illustrated book/comic hybrid, this gorgeously macabre tale is presented as a journal of scribbled marginal notes and rubber stamps. Claiming to be classified, the work has the look of a supernatural diary hidden away for more than 100 years because humankind was not ready for its true history. The first-person account details a supernatural invasion of London, complete with dream smugglers, hideous monsters lurking below the murky waters of the Thames, and a fantastic freak show in Kensington Park. Ghoulish, elaborate sketches, paintings, and maps piece together the puzzle of these nightmarish encounters and intricately bizarre arcane plots, with endless details to pore over. The creators—both pseudonymous—have crafted an addictive puzzle of a gift book for wicked imaginations. (Nov.)
