When a new student named Mika arrives from Japan, it’s Billie B. Brown’s job to help her acclimate, in this addition to the elementary schooler’s eponymous series. Over the book’s four chapters, Billie’s kindness is tested when Mika, who speaks little English, starts copying her clothing and more; large, bold type emphasizes Billie’s emotions, which progress from “excited” and “proud” to “angry” and “furious.” Fukuoka’s cartoon spot art telegraphs Billie’s and Mika’s emotions, too, and following an outburst on Billie’s part, a tender reconciliation suggests the girls are becoming not just “buddies” but friends. Simultaneously available: The Night Fright and The Deep End. Ages 4–7. (Mar.)
