Nibbles: The Dinosaur Guide

Emma Yarlet. Kane Miller, $16.99 (36p) ISBN 978-1-61067-643-4

Nibbles—a rowdy, Pac Man–like yellow monster with horns—sabotages a book about dinosaurs in this interactive romp, a follow-up to Nibbles. Readers first see signs of Nibbles in the chew mark die-cut holes in the pages. Yarlett invites readers to help catch the “Book Monster” as he nibbles his way through the chapters. While in pursuit, readers encounter facts about some of the most familiar dinosaurs: “Diplodocus could outrun a human. Diplodocus ate several tons of food every day. Scientists used to believe that Diplodocus had a trunk.” Large flaps give the hide-and-seek element an added kick, while Yarlett depicts the dinosaurs as hams with over (and under) bites, goggle eyes, and goofy expressions. Nibbles meets his match when T. rex nibbles him—and then spits him out of the book. It’s great fun to follow his path of destruction, though readers with a keen interest in dinosaurs may wonder what Nibbles really has to do with them. Ages 6–up. (Mar.)
