Elfquest: The Final Quest, Vol. 1

Wendi and Richard Pini. Dark Horse, $17.99 (192p) ISBN 978-1-61655-409-5

For more than 30 years, the Pinis' ElfQuest saga has satisfied readers with tales of the glamorous but fierce elves who share an alien planet with nonmagical, often hostile humans. New readers may feel baffled at this point, but they can catch on soon. This story essentially shows elves exploring personal relationships and enjoying enthusiastic PG-13 sex, while humans%E2%80%94especially the lunatic tyrant Angrif Djun%E2%80%94hate but secretly envy them. Also, the safe haven that one clan of elves thought they'd found is somehow tampering with their powers, so they must find a new home. Much uprooting and turmoil ensues. Richard Pini's script gives satisfying time for each familiar character to perform, creating a comforting sense of close family relationships. Wendi Pini's artwork keeps the huge cast distinct, and her composition is smoothly professional, sometimes lovely. Longtime fans won't be disappointed. (Apr.)
