Sandwiches! More Than You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Making and Eating America’s Favorite Food

Alison Deering, illus. by Bob Lentz. Capstone Young Readers, $15.95 trade paper (144p) ISBN 978-1-62370-816-0

Deering and Lentz compose a veritable love letter to the sandwich, including recipes for (and tidbits about) more than 50 examples, from basic bologna to tuna melts, reubens, and cheesesteaks. Lentz works in a brash, comic-book style: sauces and cheese ooze from the completed sandwiches on left-hand pages, while exploded versions of each sandwich showcase the individual layers and components. Deering’s descriptions are enthusiastic but also repetitive and short on substance (“Fried chicken is the ultimate comfort food”; “There’s no better comfort food than bread and cheese”), resulting in a book that looks great but isn’t very filling. Ages 9–13. (Aug.)
