Colors in the Garden

Marcos Farina. Crocodile, $11.95 (16p) ISBN 978-1-62371-849-7

Geometric flora and fauna introduce 16 different hues in this stylish addition to the Babylink board book series. Expansively interpreting the title, each page features a color and botanical element (indicated by bold header and footer labels, respectively), the latter depicted in a mid-century modern aesthetic. Fish swim among the roots of a “sky blue” hydrangea in a vase, a squat “brown” potted bonsai is almost toad-like in its angles, and the bloom of a “blue” pansy resembles a feline face. Less commonly profiled shades, shown via a fuchsia tulip, turquoise hummingbird, and, finally, a multihued apple tree, distinguish Farina’s presentation from traditional concept books. Though the multicolored image fails to include the full range of previously introduced colors, which could confuse young readers learning through pattern recognition, designs populated by snails, pill bugs, butterflies, and more give each page an aesthetically appealing surprise.
