The Paleo Foodie Cookbook: 120 Food Lover's Recipes for Healthy, Gluten-Free, Grain-Free & Delicious Meals

Arsy Vartanian with Amy Kubal. Page Street Publishing, $28 (240p) ISBN 978-1-62414-048-8

In her second Paleo cookbook, Vartanian (The Paleo Slow Cooker) once again tackles the lifestyle and food necessary to sustain the Paleo way of life. Seemingly limited in its structure (one can eat it "if it lives, grows, rots, and dies") one might assume it is nearly impossible to have tasty meals while following the diet, but this book disproves that. By employing the allowed ingredients to their utmost, one can enjoy healthy, alternative meals that are meant to help one better live his or her life. The "Smoked Salmon Nori Wraps with Wasabi Mayo" and "Slow-Cooker Chocolate Chicken Mole" are examples of dishes that expand the palate. Similarly, the "Panfried Mackerel with Green Olive Relish" or the "Ginger Lime Butter-Saut%C3%A9ed Shrimp" pack a punch. In case the reader needs a refresher course on what it means to be Paleo friendly, the first two chapters of the cookbook help explain the diet and lifestyle and include helpful charts that break down ingredients and detail how they interact with the Paleo routine. For those interested in trying out a simpler, healthier method of cooking, this is the right book to read. (Apr.)
