Saugatuck Summer

Amelia C. Gormley. Riptide (www.riptidepublishing.com), $6.99 e-book (363p) ISBN 978-1-62649-116-8

Gormley misses the mark with this bland and barely romantic coming-of-age story. Though Topher Carlisle is just 21, he already knows that he’s not good enough to achieve his dreams. His mother’s an alcoholic and his extended family rejected and abused him for being a feminine gay kid. The one person he can trust is his endearingly scene-stealing best friend, Mo. But when Mo invites him to spend the summer in her family’s Saugatuck vacation home, Topher doesn’t anticipate that a crush on her uncharismatic father will jeopardize everything: his friendship with Mo, the fragile financial stability he needs to finish school, and his sense of self-worth. Fortunately, Saugatuck is full of gay men inexplicably ready to mentor Topher through his crisis, including the gorgeous and unfathomably supportive Jace. Can Topher trust his friends and believe in himself enough to accept the help he needs to solve his problems? He’s so whiny that it’s hard to care about the answer. (May)
