Snow

Mike Bond. Mandevilla, $15.95 trade paper (250p) ISBN 978-1-62704-037-2

At the start of this so-so thriller from Bond (Assassins), two friends, Wall Street broker Steve Montclair and sports announcer Zack Wilson, discover a crashed small plane in the Montana wilderness where they’ve been hunting elk. There are no bodies; only one set of tracks in the snow leads away from the plane. Inside the aircraft are two coffins full of bags of cocaine. Both men see the cocaine as a way out of financial problems: Zack owes $2 million to Vegas gamblers, and the market has bottomed out under Steve. They tell their hunting guide, Curt Weathers, about the plane but not its contents, and while Curt calls the local sheriff to report the find, they move to hide the cocaine. Later, as they bumble around the country, Zack and Steve have serious differences about how and where to unload the goods. The tension rises when the cocaine’s original owner, cartel boss Maria Christina, and her point man, Diego, set out to reclaim it, but the plot never gains much momentum. A series of missteps leaves many dead and one lucky and unlikely survivor in this unsatisfying tale of greed and drugs. [em](Sept.) [/em]
