Expect Deception: An Operation Delphi Novel

JoAnn Smith Ainsworth. She Writes, $16.95 paper (240p) ISBN 978-1-63152-060-0

The second Operation Delphi novel (after 2016’s Expect Trouble) puts clairvoyant WAVES Lt. Livvy Delacourt and her small team of WWII paranormal investigators under direct attack from an undercover German wizard. USO magician Deryk Fergus has been involved with the Nazi group der Mumm for six years when he’s tasked with eliminating the Philadelphia-based Watch and performing sabotage at the nearby shipyard, which holds supply ships to send to the European theatre. As Livvy and her team investigate the psychic sabotage, they must also keep themselves safe from attacks they aren’t always able to recognize or prevent. The interesting premise and engaging, escalating plot are hindered by the pedestrian prose. Awkward references to a romantic subplot between Livvy and her commander, Trey, are stifled by their limited interactions, and the rest of the team at Hamilton House are forgettable. Glimpses of an intriguing setup for a sequel may entice fans of Ainsworth’s previous books, but new readers are unlikely to continue. [em](BookLife) [/em]
