Little Concepts: ABC French

Illus. by Daniel Roode. Walter Foster Jr., $12.95 (36p) ISBN 978-1-63322-412-4
This handsome addition to the Little Concepts board book series uses the letters of the alphabet to showcase the French words for 26 animals, with a few objects thrown in, too. Each creature’s name appears in French, then English. Sometimes they are similar (dauphin/dolphin), sometimes they look identical (lion/lion), and sometimes they’re wildly different (renard/fox). Roode’s 1960s retro portraits of the animals bring a carnival atmosphere to the pages—fittingly, as the book concludes with a giant parade, featuring the banjo-playing abeille (bee), hula-hooping flamant rose (flamingo), trombonist nounours (teddy bear), and all of the rest. Ages 3–6. Illustrator’s agency: Lilla Rogers Studio. (Feb.)
