The Viscount’s Promise

Christina Britton. Everafter Romance, $15.99 trade paper (320p) ISBN 978-1-63576-462-8

A viscount’s reluctant promise to his best friend leads to love in Britton’s irresistible second Twice Shy Regency. Malcolm Arborn, Viscount Morley, agrees to feign an interest in his best friend’s timid sister, 22-year-old Lady Emily Masters, whose face was disfigured in a tragic accident. Unlike most of society, Morley sees past Emily’s scar and, despite his best efforts to stay distant and not be hurt by anyone again, finds himself falling in love with her. Britton quickly captures the mores of society where a woman’s physical appearance is vital to secure a good husband. Malcolm’s boorish attention and Emily’s increasing self-confidence create a dynamic relationship as both struggle to overcome their anxieties. The appearance of Lydia, Malcolm’s devious former lover, adds plenty of drama that fuels both his lingering resentment of her and his increasing love for Emily. The passion between Malcolm and Emily simmers for most of the novel, culminating in an intense and erotic interlude that is anything but proper, and adds to a satisfying happily-ever-after ending. Britton’s historical romance is deeply gratifying. Agent: Kimberly Lionetti, Bookends Literary. (Nov.)
