Write Christmas

Thommy Hutson. Rosewind, $14.95 trade paper (300p) ISBN 978-1-64548-049-5

This heartwarming fantasy from Hutson (Jinxed) updates a favorite Christmas trope as a Scrooge-like woman is given the magical gift of a new perspective on her life. Abby Nicholson grew up in quaint Winter Glen, a town largely built by her parents, with their company, Nicholson Cards, at its center. The beauty of the town always seemed inextricably linked to the Christmas cards Abby’s beloved father created, as though his drawings were somehow brought to life. But since he died of illness seven years ago, Abby feels no love for the season. She buries herself in her work as the new owner of Nicholson Cards, stripping the company of its festive atmosphere by banning Christmas decorations and discontinuing the production of Christmas cards. Then one morning she wakes up in a version of Winter Glen where Christmas doesn’t exist at all. She’s the only one who remembers the holiday, and her friends and family are all changed for the worse. To save the dreary, joyless world, Abby will have to find a way to bring back the spirit of the season. Though slow to start, this sweet story does a good job capturing Abby’s emotional progress. Christmas enthusiasts will find this hits the spot. [em]Agent: Italia Gandolfo, Gandolfo Helin & Fountain Literary. (Dec.) [/em]
