Throw Me to the Wolves

Lindy Ryan and Christopher Brooks. Black Spot, $17.95 trade paper (278p) ISBN 978-1-64548-117-1

Ryan (Trick-or-Treat, Alistair Gray) and debut author Brooks launch their Cry Wolf contemporary dark fantasy series with an intense foray into the Deep South. Britta Orchid is haunted by her past. After moving to sleepy Vinton, La., 10 years before the start of the novel, her family was ritually murdered by the witch Selena Stone, who allowed Britta to survive but turned her into a werewolf. When Selena’s body is found in Britta’s childhood home, Britta’s pulled back to Vinton and into the center of officer Aaron Labaye’s investigation. Now Britta must contend with the ghost of her brother, seek guidance from the mambo Mam Byrdie, and confront a packmate who may sabotage the investigation—meanwhile Labaye is harboring secrets of his own. Ryan and Brooks give their supernatural tale a noir sensibility and it sizzles with suspense and eroticism. Though there’s nothing groundbreaking to the story itself, Ryan and Brooks put enough meat on its bones for readers to chew on. (May)
