Hex, Love, and Rock and Roll

Kat Turner. City Owl, $3.99 e-book (325p) ISBN 978-1-6489-8009-1

A fledgling witch finds love with a mature rock star in the midst of occult danger in Turner’s magic-heavy debut and series launch. Helen Schrader’s yoga studio is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Desperate to save her business, Helen seeks out local witch Nerissa for a money spell—and gets more than she bargained for when Nerissa enlightens Helen to her own dormant powers. Soon thereafter, Helen bumps into her longtime celebrity crush, silver fox Brian Shepard, and accidentally uses the powers she has not yet mastered to place a hex on him, unleashing a terrifying demon. The pair must work together to prevent the ravenous beast from digging its claws into Brian and confront a cult of dark magic worshippers with far more power than novice Helen is ready to face. Turner’s debut is heavier on supernatural intrigue than character development or heat; though the danger steadily mounts, the romance takes its time to reach full bloom. Still, Turner sets up a promising world that readers will be pleased to return to in subsequent installments. Paranormal fans should check this out. (Sept.)
