Unicorn Club

Suzy Senior, illus. by Leire Martin. Tiger Tales, $17.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-68010-176-8

A girl named Amy, who is starting a unicorn fan club, proudly hangs up a sign advertising it (“in shiny pink pen”) on her front gate. Many readers will relate to her disappointment when no one shows up. But as she approaches her tree house, she finds that it’s full of attendees—and they’re all enthusiastic, brightly colored unicorns with square snouts, alert eyes, and round tummies and backsides. Circumstances quickly turn around as Amy and the unicorns engage in arts and crafts (“They stomped and they sparkled on huge sheets of paper”), have snacks, and enjoy a unicorn dance party. Senior’s lines can be a bit stale (“ ‘UNICORNS? Really?’ gasped Amy, astounded”) and a little corny (“It’s time for some dancing, with ribbons to win for the funkiest moves”), but for readers enamored of unicorns, Amy’s magical day is a dream come true.
