I Like to Squeak! How Do You Speak?

Jonathan Litton, illus. by Fhiona Galloway. Tiger Tales, $12.99 (10p) ISBN 978-1-68010-505-6

A chipper mouse makes his way around the farm, repeating the declaration and question of the title to learn what noises four other animals make; a sound chip lets readers find out, too. Digital graphics create a cheerful backdrop for Litton’s playful rhymes: “Mouse sees a sheep/ (who’s half asleep)/ gazing at the stars./ ‘I like to squeak./ How do you speak?’/ Sleepy Sheep says.../ baa!” Opening large squarish flaps reveals the conclusion to each rhyme and triggers the (very effective!) sound chip. Questions written under the flaps (“Can you oink like a pig?/ Can you dance a silly jig?”) encourage kids to get involved, though many won’t need any prompting to show off their best farm noises. Ages 2–5. (Sept.)
