Winter Babies

Kathryn O. Galbraith, illus. by Adela Pons. Peachtree Petite, $6.95 (20p) ISBN 978-1-68263-067-9
It’s winter in a vibrant park landscape. Four babies with varying skin tones and marblelike eyes are bundled up in hats, coats, boots, and mittens, and they play in the fluffy, falling snow. Galbraith describes the scene in clipped phrases: “Puppies sniff” and “Rabbits hop,” while “Babies blink./ Tongues catch./ Boots sink.” The babies even sled (“Babies up./ Babies ride”), an activity that the smallest readers may wish to wait a few seasons before attempting. Pons brightens the snowy day with shades of purple, red, and blue in the children’s clothing and in lollipoplike trees—which is particularly striking when set against the whiteness of snow. Also available in the Babies in the Park series: Autumn Babies. Ages 2–6. (Sept.)
