Duck and Penguin Do NOT Like Sleepovers

Julia Woolf. Peachtree, $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-68263-201-7

Plush Rosencrantz and Guildenstern–like duo Duck and Penguin are back and as out of sorts as ever. This time, their perky human owners, Betty and Maude, are planning a backyard sleepover in a “teeny-weeny tiny tent.” Several assorted mishaps, all befalling Duck and Penguin, and two onesie outfits later (a unicorn for Duck and a duck for Penguin), the girls ditch the tent and the toys for a good night’s sleep indoors. Should Duck and Penguin stick it out, or try to make a break for it in the scary night? Digitally colored vignettes have lovely layered textures and subtleties of color, but the real stars here are the exquisitely expressive lead characters, who elevate sleepover phobia to an art form. Ages 4–8. (Sept.)
