My Heart Belongs in Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Millie’s Resolve

Rebecca Jepson. Barbour, $12.99 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-68322-603-1

Jepson continues the My Heart Belongs series (following My Heart Belongs in San Francisco, California) with this redemptive, undemanding tale set in a spa town in 1888 Colorado. Nurse Millie Cooper moved to Glenwood Springs after a broken engagement in Nantucket. Six years later, the past is brought back to her when she is asked by her former fiancé’s brother, John Drexel, to care for his pampered mother, who’s moving to Colorado in hopes of restoring her health. Millie takes the job with the condescending Mrs. Drexel and proves an able nurse. When tragedy strikes Millie’s former fiancé, the Drexel family falls into disarray and Millie must step in to help. As she becomes close to the family for the second time, she turns to her faith in Christ to overcome past pain and open herself to new love. Jepson’s tale has its charms, but it’s burdened by nearly endless asides that expose character motivations and telegraph plot developments. Series fans will enjoy this, but readers looking for anything more than a pleasing, predictable historical will be disappointed. Agent: Joyce Hart, Hartline Literary. (May)
