Plant Society: Create an Indoor Oasis for Your Urban Spaces

Jason Chongue. Hardie Grant, $22.99 (192p) ISBN 978-1-74379-343-5

With a nod to the indoor gardening of the 1960s and ’70s, this hip and thorough guide provides readers with the necessary skills and inspiration to enliven their interiors with greenery. In 2016, Chongue, a Melbourne architect and interior designer, cofounded the Plant Society, a so-called social network for gardeners of all levels that aims to “nurture and preserve rare and interesting plant species for future generations and share the knowledge and skills required to grow them.” Taking both its title and mission from that organization, this book features basic gardening instructions alongside interviews with a handful of experienced growers from around the world. Chapters cover tools and materials, soil ratios, recipes for homemade pesticides and fungicides, and a plant encyclopedia of 20 varieties ordered according to difficulty of care. The best and most original parts of the book pertain to Chongue’s expertise in the realm of interior design. He offers guidance on how plants balance and provide texture in various rooms and recommends, for example, using large foliage such as the umbrella plant for bedrooms with high ceilings. Urban dwellers and stylists with an affinity for indoor gardening will find this useful guide most appealing. Color photos. [em](Apr.) [/em]
