Extraordinary Ornamental Edibles: 100 Perennials, Trees, Shrubs and Vines for Canadian Gardens

Mike Lascelle. Douglas & McIntyre (PGW, U.S. dist.; UTP, Canadian dist.), $24.95 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-1-77162-179-3

This attractive and informative guide from arborist and gardening columnist Lascelle (A Place in the Rain) introduces readers to an array of plants and trees that can add both beauty and produce to gardens. Some, such as crab apples, raspberries, and cranberries, will be familiar, but there are also unexpected turns; Lascelle recommends nibbling the flowers and young shoots of hosta plants and the blossoms of lilac, wisteria, and electric daisies, as well as drinking sumac lemonade. More surprising is his list of what can be grown in at least in some areas of Canada, including figs, olives, bamboo, and banana. Each entry is only two pages, including notes on edibility, species, geographic origins, hardiness, growing and harvest times, and requirements for sun, water, pollination, and pruning, as well as a large color photo or two. A serious green thumb may be required to grow some of these edibles, but this book will certainly provide the inspiration and information to get started. (Aug.)
