Time Shards: Tempus Fury

Dana Fredsti and David Fitzgerald. Titan, $15.95 trade paper (480p) ISBN 978-1-78565-456-5

Fredsti and Fitzgerald cap their Time Shards series (after Shatter War) with this furiously paced finale, set in a world where a cataclysmic “Event” has shattered the space-time continuum into fragments in which peoples and histories now abut each other anachronistically. The novel’s action is divided into two parts. In the first, Amber, a psychic adolescent from contemporary San Diego, teams up with a multicultural and multi-temporal cohort that includes a Celtic warrior, a British WWII soldier, 19th-century journalist Nellie Bly, and a pack of rampaging dinosaurs to thwart a Panzer tank blitzkrieg against ancient Alexandria. In the second, the same intrepid band travels to Antarctica in their futuristic ship, the Vanuatu, to reverse the chaos unleashed by the evil mastermind responsible for the Event. Though readers new to this world will be lost, series fans will find much to enjoy in the authors’ creative mash-ups of historical and fictional characters and the sustained mayhem of its battle sequences. This is a worthy finale. [em](Apr.) [/em]
