Search-and-Find Alphabet of Alphabets

AJ Wood and Mike Jolley, illus. by Allan Sanders. Wide Eyed Editions, $17.99 (48p) ISBN 978-1-78603-002-3

This inventive abecedarian offers 26 separate illustrated alphabets, one for each letter, sorted by broad-ranging themes and set in a variety of landscapes, from underground to outer space. Each of Sanders’s digitally rendered scenes features alphabetized objects for readers to seek and identify, and some offer illustrated keys: “Can you find all of these things in the ocean?” An anchor, crab, and electric eel number among the undersea items to spot; a forest scene contains creatures both real (a fox and bear) and mythical (a dragon and unicorn); and a museum-themed alphabet displays hidden artifacts such as a suit of armor, cannon, and obelisk. The playfully cluttered spreads delight, and the seek-and-find aspect offers strong interactive appeal for young readers, who may also pick up new vocabulary words as they peruse the detailed pages.
