This lively, large-format guide to planet Earth explores broad topics such as climate, the equator, ecosystems, the poles, earthquakes, and water. Five cartoonlike children take readers along to explore remote—and sometimes quite dangerous—regions. They observe an erupting volcano, dive underwater to learn about tectonic plates, go mountain climbing, stand in the path of a tornado, and gain firsthand knowledge of food chains while exploring a pond ecosystem. Sidebars and charts delve more deeply into subjects such as weather forecasting, tsunamis, Earth’s layers, and how mountains are formed. Nelson addresses the human impact on the environment, discussing pollution and overharvesting of resources. While climate change is not a significant focus, a final spread advocates for the use of green energy and other lifestyle changes. It’s an entertaining and fact-filled resource for general knowledge about Earth science. A double-sided poster is included. Ages 8–11. (Apr.)
