Natural Tables: Nature-Inspired Tablescapes for Memorable Gatherings

Shellie Pomeroy. Chronicle, $29.95 (224p) ISBN 978-1-79721-016-2

In this tranquil debut, textile artist Pomeroy finds no shortage of decor inspiration in the outdoors. As she writes, “No matter the season, there always was and still is a bounty of decor waiting to be gathered.” Pomeroy begins with some styling basics, touching on color (natural ones have a “warm and inviting allure”), fabrics (linens are “essential”), and the benefits of foraging (a “free source of beauty”). Then come 15 eye-catching table designs: there’s the blue and orange–toned “Weekend Brunch,” which uses food as a styling element; the striking “Modern Dutch Master” that resembles a still-life; a comfy “Plant Oasis” with cushion seating, ferns, and rattan place mats; and a sparse but stunning “Nordic Winter” with wood bowls, vintage glasses, and foraged pine branches. Creative tricks for accents accompany each setting (try wrapping potted herbs with cut fabric or cotton napkins for a special touch, and natural beeswax candles on cakes add a sweet aroma to a room), as do full-page photos. The recipes and DIY projects included are a huge bonus—readers will learn how to put together a knock-out charcuterie board, make botanical cocktails, and dye linens with avocado pits. Those looking to spruce up their tables will find this takes the intimidation out of the process. (Mar.)
