The Super Twins (The Super Twins #1)

Andy Slinger, illus. by Kate Mottershaw. Twin Dad, $7.99 paper (143p) ISBN 978-1-83810-130-5

In the aftermath of a freak “radioactive asteroid” strike, 13-year-old identical twins Jake and Ryan Rutherford, depicted as brown-haired and light-skinned in fine-lined digital illustrations by Mottershaw, discover they have gained superpowers in this short middle grade adventure from Slinger. When their neglectful but beloved mother dies of a heart attack, Jake and Ryan move in with their health-conscious, strict father, “a true man’s man after his time in the military.” After the asteroid destroys most of their home, Jake, who now has super strength, and Ryan, who now has superior intelligence, swiftly decide to become superheroes. But as a dark crime wave befalls “the sleepy town of Trincaster,” the duo jumps to investigate the bombings of their school kitchen and the local chocolate factory. When the Super Twins uncover the villain’s identity, they must overcome personal emotions to save their town. Jake and Ryan’s strong bond imparts a gentle lesson of sibling love. While those familiar with the genre will recognize familiar tropes, and a few continuity hiccups interrupt the story, this duology opener is a fast-paced, witty escapade that young superhero fans will quickly devour. Ages 7–12. (Self-published)
