As she walks to school, Ruby notices all kinds of scary creatures, including crocodiles, witches, and tigers. Her mother claims that they’re harmless, “But she’s wrong. I must be brave, I must be strong.” With magic dances and songs, Ruby finds the courage to continue—until she reaches the classroom door. Then her mother reminds her that school can be full of adventure, too (“Ruby, perhaps today you will be/ Finding treasure in the sea;/ Catching dragons in the sky,/ And teaching fairies how to fly”). A cheery reminder of the fun to be had—and fears overcome—with a little imagination. Ages 4–7. (July)
