The Singing Heart of the World: Creation, Evolution and Faith

John Feehan, Columba Press (Dufour Editions, dist.), $26.95 paper (204p) ISBN 978-1-85607-677-7

The author, a lecturer in environmental science at University College in Dublin, traces the history of sciences and theology to justify the theory of evolution. Knowledge of the cosmos through history exploded with the Hubble telescope in the late 20th century. Feehan traces the architecture of creation and man's search for a personal God. "If you speak the language of belief in God, and embrace what the revelation of science tells you, then no species is insignificant," he argues. The theology parallels Teilhard de Chardin's view of the future, calling on the readers not only to look ahead but to be cognizant of the limited resources of the planet. His call to Christian virtues and community makes what started out to be a science book become a call to evangelical Christianity to save the planet. In a technological age, Feehan says that humanity itself is evolving. We witness evolution and survival of the fittest by watching our own world. The book will appeal to anyone who wants to use practical faith where it intersects with the climate change debate. (Sept.)
