Fairytale Colours: Goldilocks: A Pop-Up Book

John O’Leary. Tango (IPG/Trafalgar Sq., dist.), $19.99 (16p) ISBN 978-1-85707-888-6

O’Leary offers a color-based spin on the story of Goldilocks, while using flaps, tabs, and pop-ups to bring interactive elements into the story. A tab on the first page lets readers pull Goldilocks through a field of yellow wildflowers as she enters the forest, against her mother’s instructions. When she arrives at the bears’ purple cottage, readers open a window to find Goldilocks sitting before purple bowls of porridge. The retelling itself is straightforward, and while some of the color elements make intrinsic sense (Goldilocks’s yellow hair, the brown bears), others, such as orange chairs or the blue door of Goldilocks’s house, feel awkwardly imposed on the story. Ages 3–5. (Aug.)
