Harris shares a sumptuous vision of romantic Venice in this interweaving of descriptive text and lush images. While the text is enlightening, the book's photographs are even better. In one amusing two-page spread, a comic-looking snowman appears before the Piazza San Marco; opposite it, another photograph shows Woody Allen posing in the same place. Another pair of pages shows the detail on a Venetian gondola on one side, and an image of a similar Fortuny fabric design on the other. Quirky shots of Italians chatting away on mobile phones form a nice juxtaposition to shots of the city's historic architecture. The latest in the Orient Express Travel Series, this book also explores the art of making Venetian glass, the Carnevale, classic restaurants and famous landmarks. Although skimpy in terms of specific travel information, Harris's contribution presents a well-rounded portrait of an intriguing city.
