Sunrise to High-Rise: A Wallbook of Architecture Through the Ages

Illus. by Lucy Dalzell. Cicada (DAP, dist.), $24.95 (20p) ISBN 978-1-908714-18-3

When fully expanded, this concertina-style foldout book serves as a visual timeline of the evolution of architecture, from a temple in what is now Turkey that dates to 10,000 B.C.E. (“It features etchings of dangerous animals on T-shaped pillars—believed to ward off evil spirits”) to well-known structures including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Chrysler Building, and the Sydney Opera House. Toying with size and perspective, Dalzell playfully mashes together dozens of buildings (Wright’s Fallingwater wraps around the base of the architect’s Guggenheim Museum in N.Y.C.), which are dotted with tiny photographic people and animals. The reverse offers substantive introductions to 18 architectural periods, bringing another layer of utility to this handsome project. All ages. (Nov.)
