Me and My Dad

Sally Morgan and Ezekiel Kwaymullina, illus. by Matt Ottley. Little Hare (IPG/Trafalgar, dist.), $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-921541-81-0

During an action-filled day at the beach, a boy recounts everything his father isn't afraid of, but it's Ottley's illustrations that do all the talking in this hyperbolic paper-over-board story. Making dynamic use of perspective and scale, Ottley shows the boy's father laughing as a skyscraper-high sandcastle tumbles down on him, flexing his bicep while a surging wave threatens to swallow him up, and confidently swimming amid transparent jellyfish to unhook a fishing line. There's a cartoonish sense of playfulness throughout, right up to the final scene in which the father's sole, improbable fear%E2%80%94seagulls%E2%80%94is revealed, giving the boy a chance to be the brave one.
