ABC Is for Circus

Graphic artist Hruby's dazzling circus compositions make expert use of electric colors, set against black and white backgrounds to create a striking, high-contrast abecedarian. In Hruby's flat geometric scenes, circular fireworks explode in a black sky ("F is for Fireworks"); an adorned white carousel horse prances ("H is for Horses") on its pole, while the black silhouette of a second horse retreats; and a blue elephant is composed of layered semicircles to an almost robotic effect. Traditional subjects—calliope, daredevil, ringmaster, ventriloquist—nod to the Barnum era, while Hruby's abstract images tip their hat to the surreality of Cirque du Soleil. Ages 1–3. (Nov.)
