Win the Job You Want!: 7 Secrets Hiring Managers Don’t Tell You. But We Will!

Pat Andrew and Eleanor Hill. Higherlife Publishing (www.ahigherlife.com), $15.95 trade paper (160p) ISBN 978-1-935245-62-9

In this harsh economic climate, there is a ready market for books aimed at the unemployed and underemployed. Organized in a straightforward manner and with an index of the sort that many books of this kind lack, the book covers a wide range of topics, from personal finances to negotiating compensation packages with prospective employers. Consultants Andrew and Hill also provide advice on which methods are unlikely to result in a job, or worse, land the would-be employee on a blacklist for spamming prospective employers. It’s a sad truth, but there really should be a market for books about how to write books on personal growth. The authors get points for their organization and clear language. Unfortunately, much of what they say is commonsense advice. The book is best suited to those just entering the job market, those whose total inexperience will best benefit from this particular presentation of known techniques. (Jan.)
