In Autumn.../En Otoño...

Susana Madinabeitia Manso, illus. by Emily Hanako Momohara. Blue Manatee (IPG, dist.), $7.99 (14p) ISBN 978-1-936669-61-5

In a cheerful bilingual follow-up to In Spring/En Primavera, an Asian girl introduces autumnal items that include apples, squirrels, and scarecrows while demonstrating what she (and readers, by extension) is capable of. Emphasizing similes, Manso uses a repeating structure of statements (in both English and Spanish) followed by questions: “In autumn... pumpkins smile. I can smile like a pumpkin! Can you smile like a pumpkin?” Momohara’s photographs of the girl appear against blue backdrops that evoke crisp autumn skies and contrast pleasingly with the girl’s yellow romper and smatterings of bright fall leaves. Up to age 3. (Sept.)
