Dead Too Long

Ron Handberg. 40 Press, $16.95 trade paper (412p) ISBN 978-1-938-473-26-5

Handberg's busy sixth novel about the exploits of the news staff of Channel 7 in Minneapolis (after 2010's Deadly Reunion) centers on newcomer Gabby Gooding. Reputed to be a sharp but prickly reporter, Gabby arrives at the TV station from San Jose, Calif., after being hired by chain executive Sam Ryan without the knowledge of Channel 7's news director, George Barclay. Gabby's first assignment pairs her with photographer Zach Anthony to cover the supposed suicide of an unidentified man, but Gabby sees too many anomalies and persuades Barclay to let her investigate. Gabby's probing uncovers a connection to a corporation in Delaware, Zimbronics, and has the dual effect of alerting the bad guys and the FBI. Gabby and Zach become closer as the case expands. Meanwhile, Gabby's abusive ex-husband, Craig Jessup, follows her to Minneapolis and poses a major threat. Handberg's double-barreled plot sometimes sprawls, but Gabby is an appealing addition to the series. (May)
