A Season of Sons: Black Spiral Book 1

Rob Tucker. Tell-Tale, $25 trade paper (398p) ISBN 978-1-944056-86-5

At the start of Tucker’s arresting series launch, Rev. Lawrence Livingston, who has devoted himself to “encouraging and promoting the acceptance and value of all religions,” is murdered in a New York City church by Antonio Guzman, a Georgetown University graduate raised by Jesuit priests, who injects the cleric with a drug before slicing open his abdomen with a machete. Guzman then masturbates with Livingston’s blood and ejaculates over the altar Bible, leaving a DNA sample that contains a dark, third spiral helix. FBI agent Leon Safullo investigates the bizarre crime, which is made even odder by Guzman having somehow removed any traces of blood from the scene. The plot thickens after Guzman emails the media and claims he resides “in the dark spaces of the universe. By putting a biological life form to death, I cause the vibration of energy, atoms, and the soul is set free. Lawrence Livingston is now one of us.” Tucker keeps the pages turning. This paranormal serial killer thriller isn’t for the faint of heart, though Blake Crouch fans may be intrigued. (Self-published)
