Log Cabin Improv: Quilts with a Twist on Tradition

Mary M. Hogan. Landauer, $22.99 trade paper (128p) ISBN 978-1-947163-89-8

Designer Hogan (Fast-Fold Hexie Quilting) takes the intimidation out of improvising in this inspiring look at quilting as “a type of play.” Assuring readers they can “explore a variety of improv techniques” and still finish a quilt, Hogan spins the basic log cabin block (consisting of a center square and fabric strips bordering the center called “logs”) in a number of ways. She replaces the square center with a hexagon, for example, cuts out crooked logs for a funky effect, and mixes in leftover fabric strips. Her patterns include the “beginner’s log cabin improv” and the “wonky log cabin with lines,” in which a high-contrast string outlines each of the pieces in the block. Other projects include a mixed-media quilt that incorporates ribbons, zippers, and lace, and the “circle log cabin,” which uses circles for the log cabin centers. Step-by-step pictures will help quilters new to the improv game. This is a great option for quilters who have mastered the basics and are ready to have some fun. (June)
