What Happens in the Castle

McKnight concludes the What Happens trilogy (after What Happens in the Ruins) with a mild, formulaic contemporary romance. Midwife Savannah Adelson travels to Scotland from New York for her college friend’s wedding and spends the train ride to the Highlands engaged in playful banter with Scotsman Rhys Mackinnon. After saying their goodbyes, they’re pleasantly surprised when Rhys shows up at her friend’s castle a short time later and they learn they are attending the same wedding. With bride and groom engrossed in wedding preparations, Rhys is happy to act first as Savannah’s tour guide and then as her pretend boyfriend when her cheating ex shows up. Though the love story is thin on conflict and surprisingly tame, the close relationship between Savannah and her college BFFs is touching and well-rendered. Series fans will be satisfied by this sweet if unremarkable romance. (Feb.)
