Draw the Line: 100+ Things You Can Do to Change the World!

The Draw the Line Artists. Street Noise, $18.99 trade paper (128p) ISBN 978-1-951491-15-4

Each page in this galvanizing multi-artist comics collection offers a suggestion for positive political or social change, from planting bee gardens to engaging in civil disobedience. The majority of the actions end up being small, everyday changes: buy used clothes instead of new; vote; use less plastic; eat less meat; listen with an open mind. Mixed in are grander aspirations that require a good deal more time, effort, and money, such as suing over an unjust law or running for political office. One or two of the points may feel frivolous (cultivate a large Twitter following), but overall this is a cheerful and practical list of progressive to-do items. The mix of diverse art styles supports the book’s message that wide-scale change must be a community effort, with single-page comics and illustrations created by 106 artists from 16 countries, including known names such as Lucy Knisley, Dave McKean, Sarah Mirk, Bishakh Som, and Jim Terry along with newcomers. Myfanwy Tristram, who also draws two pieces, leads what is credited as the collection’s creative team, which registered under a creative commons license and will be donating all proceeds to charity. There’s a lot of heart here, and the cheerleading tone is well matched to the effort’s flip-and-pick do-good approach. This would make a nifty gift for a progressive-minded recent graduate, or a motivational charge-up for anyone looking to start fresh with best intentions. (Nov.)
